Growth Unlocked
“SUPERabled” Book One tells the story of Louisa, an 11-year-old girl navigating life with quadriplegia. Through chapters that explore her encounters at a new school, interactions with her family and experiences within her community, Louisa’s journey emphasizes resilience, empathy and the redefinition of perceptions around ability and disability. Her story, reflecting personal growth and the breaking of societal barriers, serves as a foundation for the “SUPERabled” story-building application, which aims to empower students by allowing them to see their unique challenges as strengths. This narrative framework supports the application’s objectives by encouraging self-reflection, empathy and a shift in perspective regarding disabilities.
Description of the SUPERabled Story-building Application
The “SUPERabled” interactive story-building application is a platform that personalizes narratives for students in grades 2-4, highlighting their unique challenges as strengths. By integrating with LMSs like Google Classroom or Schoology, it offers an interactive narrative experience, allowing students to shape their stories based on personal challenges, thereby fostering a sense of empowerment, self-worth and confidence. It also provides story structure elements to help with writing skills.

The interface will be designed to cater to the diverse needs of students. This includes those with visual and hearing impairments, mobility challenges, learning differences, language processing issues, as well as second language learners and other groups historically marginalized based on race, color, national origin, gender, age, or disability. Our approach involves the development of advanced, user-friendly features that allow for seamless input of responses and deliver prompts and story outcomes in formats that are tailored to each user’s specific requirements for visual, auditory, physical, cognitive and linguistic accessibility.
Mechanism of Personalizing Stories
The story-building application will feature interactive prompts that are tailored to each student’s unique profile, which includes their age, disability, reading level, and any other personal identifiers they opt to share. This customization ensures that the stories students create reflect their personal experiences and challenges, casting them as the heroes of their narratives. The application is designed to bolster empowerment, confidence, and a sense of belonging, encouraging students to perceive their distinctive traits as strengths. This personalized and inclusive approach not only enhances learning but also fosters self-acceptance. It enables students to work autonomously or with assistance from teachers or aides, further accommodating diverse learning needs.
